2014 Election Update

The 2014 election is closer than people think – in fact, it’s already arrived for some.

Fundraising has begun, speculation as to who will and who won’t run is rampant, tax issues were punted by the Legislature to voters, all of which shapes up for mid-term elections that could be just as critical – and just as entertaining– as any presidential year contests.

Nevada finds itself with all its constitutional offices up this cycle and all but Governor Brian Sandoval (R) is term limited. While the Governor has said he will run for re-election in 2014, what happens after that could shake up the race for Lieutenant Governor. Regardless, the jockeying has begun, with declarations, exploratory committees and rumors galore.

The battle for control of the state senate will be at the forefront once again, where Republicans will try to wrest control of a slim 11-10 majority Democrats enjoy. The two key races could very well be Justin Jones (D) fight for re-election and whether Republicans can still hold the seat held by Barbara Cegavske, who is term limited and can’t run again.

Things will be less contentious in the Assembly, where Democrats hold a comfortable 26-16 majority, but Republicans hope they can cut into that margin.

In a state where court justices and judges are elected, 2014 shapes up as a big year. Two Supreme Court Justice seats are up along with every District Court Judge seat in the state.

Candidate filing begins January 6th for judicial candidates and March 3rd for non-judicial candidates. The primary election is June 10th and the general election is November 4th.
