The Affordable Care Act
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare, puts in place strong consumer protections, provides new coverage options and gives you the tools you need to make informed choices about your health.

Two major components of the Act allow States to:

  • Expand Medicaid to uninsured adults earning less than 138% of the Federal Poverty Level.
  • Develop health insurance exchanges through which individuals (and small businesses) can purchase health insurance at more affordable rates.
The Affordable Care Act does many other things, such as prohibiting insurance companies from dropping your coverage if you get sick or denying coverage for anyone with a pre?existing condition. Insurance companies are also required to cover preventive care like mammograms and other cancer screenings.
